Kathryn Tappen: “Many eyes are on the Carolina Hurricanes and all the players you know should be signed, restricted free agent Martin Necas. What do you hear about him and what teams might be interested in him?”
Pagnotta: “A lot. Most teams, at least internally, have him on their radar, him on their radar as a target to pursue once those talks get going.
So the Carolina Hurricanes really like this player. They will have a conversation with his agent about what an extension might look like. And you talk to other people in the league, if he works full time, he’s looking at $7, $7.5 million in AAV. That seems to be the consensus among some of the groups out there and their belief in what they might end up getting.
But, but this is a player that will attract interest. His father may have spoken openly to the media abroad about his desire for an expanded role. More burden. More on power play. More than five out of five. And frankly, under Rod Brind’Amour’s system, there are question marks about whether he’ll be able to exploit his talents in that regard.
So there are groups that have them on their radar, on their target list. Seattle is there, Nashville, Montreal, Philadelphia Flyers, Calgary Flames too. There are a number of teams that will call Eric Tulsky and the Carolina staff to see if they can get him out of Carolina.”
EJ Hradek: “Yes, I will tell you that it is electricity. He has electrical skills. I mean, now we’ve talked about Rangers and some of their players and if you’re trying to win, I think you need a mix of players. And if you already have a team that has, you know, some, some physical players or some good size, maybe a guy like Marty Necas comes in there and gives you that ability. “
Dave Reid: “What would you give up to get him?”
Hradek: “Yes, that’s true, because…”
Pagnotta: “It will be very expensive.”
Reid: “It’s going to be expensive. And you know, I always think about the guy who says ahh, he doesn’t fit into the Carolina program. Well Scott Niedermeyer wasn’t in the New Jersey system and he could have gotten more points, more points means more money. More money means, it doesn’t mean Stanley Cups. It doesn’t mean winning teams.
So I always think Hmmm, you know, you’re in a really good place. You have a really good team. You know, if you’re that good, you’re going to force them to put you on a power play. It’s fun to listen to and then, Man, oh, man, it’s a tough place to be from where you’re, you know, you’re really few players. “
Pagnotta: “And obviously there is, some discussion, it’s already about Vancouver and Filip Hronek and maybe matching the number of free agents they have on the blue line in Raleigh. That could be an opportunity to see if they are willing to move him to a defender position.
Conversely, they also started negotiations with many of their free agents as well. Brett Pesce, Brady Skjei, so that could be their chance to finish that behind if they take out Necas.”
