Nick Dunlap tested the brand new TaylorMade “Proto” iron at the Rocket Mortgage Classic – and it’s very different from the model tested earlier this year.
Rory McIlroy debuted the TaylorMade “Proto” 4-iron during the Valero Texas Open in April, touting its superior launch and target feel, and has used it in every tournament since.
Soon after, Collin Morikawa did the same at Heritage, using a TaylorMade “Proto” 4-iron, before Michael Block used the first full set of “Proto” irons from the same maker at the 2024 PGA Championship.
The “Proto” irons were later discovered to be the TaylorMade P-7CB back irons, which LPGA star Nelly Korda was fielding.
But now Dunlap has been spotted testing a completely different TaylorMade “proto” iron at the Detroit Golf Club that has set tongues wagging.
Because of the screw hole in the toe section and the thru-slot in the root of the iron, there have been early speculations that the iron has a hollow body. Compared to the previous P7CB by TaylorMade “Proto,” its design is very different, and if it is a new construction with a hollow body, it may offer a slight increase in ball speed on the face.
Since TaylorMade hasn’t revealed details about the internals, this is speculation at this point. Until more details and comments are made public, all we have to go on for now are pictures.
Dunlap had previously shipped TaylorMade P7MC irons as his standard.
With precision play and minimal forgiveness, the P7MC caters to the best strikers of the ball. These instruments are marketed as a club that ‘celebrates all the work you’ve put in to get to this point and become the perfect tool to keep grinding’.
These are the rear fenders and have a very similar look to the Prototype seen in Detroit.
Dunlap announced he was changing careers and accepting membership on the PGA Tour, a week after his American Express victory. He also became the second youngest winner on the PGA Tour in the last 90 years with that feat.
He is currently not signed to TaylorMade as an employee who previously held a NIL deal with the company while an associate golfer on the Alabama Crimson Tide golf team.
His putter is still owned by TaylorMade, though he uses a Srixon 3-iron and an Odyssey O-Works #7 Tank putter and Titleist Pro V1 balls.
