Nørgaard braves British Masters title defense – Golf News

Niklas Nørgaard held on to win his first DP World Tour title by two shots at the British Masters held at the Belfry.

The 32-year-old Dane posted a closing round of 72 to claim his first victory at 16 under, two shots clear of Thriston Lawrence, who halved the deficit overnight but was unable to catch Nørgaard.

Nørgaard started the day four strokes ahead of the South African but was forced to fight for victory on a dramatic final day at the four-time Ryder Cup venue.

He canceled out a bogey at the second hole with a birdie on the next hole, but three-putted the fourth as he turned in one but still managed to top the leaderboard.

Nørgaard birdied both pars on the back nine to regain a four-stroke lead, but the charge against his maiden title threatened to slip away from him at the 15th.

NEWS OF THE SEASON

He missed the green with his second shot to the par five, before seeing his pitch from 23 yards miss the green. He then took three more attempts to reach the green with his ball buried in the thick of the greenside, before finally going down for a double-bogey seven.

However, he showed nerves of steel on the next hole, holing an eight-footer to set sail before birdieing the 17th and ensuring he would take a two-stroke lead down the iconic 18th hole of Brabazon.

As it turned out, the hole that saw everything in the game added another unforgettable moment to its storied tapestry, when Nørgaard played well enough to see him become the third Danish winner of the British Masters, joining Thomas Bjørn and Thorbjørn Olesen on the list of champions. .

South African Lawrence came up short in his quest for a fifth DP World Tour title but moved up to second place in the Race to Dubai when he finished second.

Another Dane, Rasmus Højgaard, posted an impressive 7-under round of 65 to finish third on 12 under, one clear of Frenchman Jeong weon Ko who held fourth place despite a double bogey.
