Noussair Mazraoui’s transfer is open as Aaron Wan-Bissaka is being tested

Manchester United are looking to complete the signing of Bayern Munich defender Noussair Mazraoui as Aaron Wan-Bissaka prepares for a medical at West Ham United.

United had agreed a double deal with Bayern to sign De Ligt and Mazraoui. In total, it will exceed £50m, with the latter responsible for £17m of the total value – including add-ons. But that side was dependent on the club being able to successfully offload Wan-Bissaka.

The agreement on the Wan-Bissaka front was reported on Saturday night as well Sky Sports News’ Dhamesh Sheth has revealed that it caused the former Crystal Palace defender to leave London on Sunday morning. The aim is to start treatment in the afternoon.

Despite the lack of defensive depth, Wan-Bissaka was not part of United’s squad to face Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The transfer effectively opens up United’s ability to move forward in their pursuit of Mazraoui, which may now be a formality as he and the aforementioned De Ligt join Erik ten Hag.

Both players have worked under the Dutch coach at Ajax with great success and their double arrival at Old Trafford will increase the number of ex-Ajax players in the squad to five – Andre Onana, Lisandro Martinez and Anthony are the three available.

Wan-Bissaka has made 190 appearances for United since joining from Palace in a £50m deal in the summer of 2019, allegedly as a result of downplaying the number of 804 right-backs. It was also part of a clear recruitment strategy to prioritize emerging homegrown talent, with Daniel James and Harry Maguire both arriving in the same transfer window.

But a combination of injuries, loss of form and attacking limitations, along with the re-emergence of rival right-back Diogo Dalot, saw Wan-Bissaka’s playing time dwindle after 2021 and the sacking of former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
