“Official Chance,” Rockets and Alperen Sengun Sign Extension – Basketball Insiders

Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun hopes to get a contract extension before October 21.St deadline.

“We have been talking,” said Sengun. “I want to get a contract, and (the Rockets) are trying to negotiate with us and we are trying to negotiate with them. So, it was good. We will make it work. We still have time, you know, and hopefully we can make it work.”

According to the Houston Chronicle, there is a “legitimate chance,” the two sides reach an agreement before the stated deadline. Sengun is expected to make $5.4 million this year and will have a cap hit of $16.3 million if he becomes a restricted free agent. Sengun is the focal point of Houston’s young core making it easy for a deal to be done soon.

A Potential Extension Between the Houston Rockets and Alperen Sengun Looks Possible

Impact and Possibilities of Alperen Sengun

Sengun is one of the brightest rising stars in the NBA. Some have even compared him to the Nuggets star, Nikola Jokic, in the way he plays. Last season, he averaged 21.1 points, 9.4 total rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game in 63 matchups. In Sengun’s career, he averaged 14.9 points, 3.8 assists, and 7.9 total rebounds per game while posting an effective field goal percentage of 54.6 percent. The Turkish sensation also improved his shot blocking and rim protection skills.

The numbers in this feature don’t paint the whole picture. He was able to hold his own against some of the top centers in the league last year. Coming off a career year and entering his fourth season, Alperen Sengun will have a big season. One could argue that he hasn’t entered his first one yet. It’s a dream scenario for a Houston Rockets team trying to build around young players.

Houston’s exciting Young Core

Sengun isn’t the only high-powered young prospect on the Rockets’ roster. Jalen Green has shown to score at times. He is a formidable spark plug for the Rockets offense. Not to mention, the team is topped by Cam Whitmore, Tari Eason, Amen Thompson, and rookie, Reed Sheppard. With another year together for most of this young core, it seems only a matter of time before their development starts paying dividends for the Rockets. If Sengun continues to develop at a good rate and stays healthy, there is no reason to think that the Houston Rockets cannot secure a Play-In spot this season.
