Oilers Use Strong Third Period to Knock Out Canucks 7-3 – Hockey Writers – Edmonton Oilers

The Vancouver Canucks begin their six-game homestand against the Edmonton Oilers, their first meeting since Game 7 of the second round of the 2024 Playoffs. The game started as a highly anticipated playoff game and ended as a blowout as the Oilers used a strong third period to win 7-3, led by two goals from Connor Brown and three-point attempts from Connor McDavid and Mattias Janmark.

Recap of the game

For the seventh game in a row, the Canucks allowed the opposition to open the scoring as the Oilers got on the board first thanks to Leon Draisaitl’s first goal. Right there on the tail end of the power play, he was left alone to roof his team’s lead in the 10th past Kevin Lankinen who was trying to get the puck behind a jam in front of the net. The first half itself was very tight, with the two Pacific Division rivals fighting for every inch of ice like it was a playoff game. The Oilers ended up outscoring the Canucks 10-7 in the opening frame.

Unlike a slow, boring first half, the second half was more exciting as both teams looked at their offense. The Oilers took a 3-0 lead with goals by Corey Perry and Viktor Arvidsson at 1:13 before the Canucks responded with goals by Elias Pettersson and Filip Hronek 1:59 apart. In total, the Oilers and Canucks scored four goals in 3:30 to make it a one-goal game going into the third.

The last period started as a close game at 3-2 and quickly turned into a blowout. The Oilers blew the doors off the Canucks and the usually tough Lankinen scored four unanswered goals. It started with Connor Brown at 6:10, followed by Connor McDavid at 7:16, Brett Kulak at 8:08 and finally Brown at 11:05. In all, it took 4:55 to turn a 3-2 game into a 7-2 rout. Lankinen was pulled mercifully after Brown’s second goal after allowing seven goals on 27 shots, giving way to Arturs Silovs. Pius Suter scored a late third goal for the Canucks, but all it did was make the scoreline nice to watch – but not much. Overall, it was in the third period that the Oilers beat the Canucks 15-6 and beat them 4-1. Skinner allowed three goals on 20 shots but walked away with the win.

What’s Next for the Canucks and Oilers

The Canucks will continue playing at home against another team from Alberta, the Calgary Flames, on Tuesday in their second meeting of the season. They have struggled on home ice so far with a 1-2-3 record and a staggering 13 goals in their last two at Rogers Arena, losing to the New Jersey Devils 6-0 on Oct. 30 and 7-3 tonight against each other. the Oilers. They will look to turn it around with the Flames on Tuesday.

The Oilers, meanwhile, return home to face the New York Islanders, also on Tuesday, after their best offensive performance of the season so far.
