Watkins has had to bide his time in Germany and hasn’t been given many chances by Southgate, but he did his best when called up on Wednesday evening.

With the game looking set to go into extra time Southgate turned to Watkins with ten minutes remaining and sent the Aston Villa man on for Harry Kane.

In the last minute, Watkins received a ball in the box from substitute Cole Palmer, which Stefan de Vrij expertly turned into the net.

The goal sparked wild scenes on and off the pitch, and after the game Watkins, who was voted Player of the Year, admitted he never thought he would be playing for England at the Euros.

The 28-year-old has come of age and ten years ago he was playing for Exeter City and now he is scoring goals to put England in major finals.

His career is far from over and he could have a big role to play in Sunday’s final against England as England look to end their 58-year wait for the trophy.
