Pak vs Eng – Ben Stokes, Matt Potts in for Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson in England XI

Ben Stokes will return to captain England in Multan this week after two months out of action due to a torn hamstring. Stokes boosted his recovery last week and will replace Chris Woakes in one of England’s two changes from the first Test, with Matthew Potts also coming in for the rested Gus Atkinson.

England are preparing for a low-scoring second Test, the game will be played on the same line as the one used to win the innings last week. The field had a lot of water but dried out in the sun during the two days of practice, and the used surface could bring players from both teams into the game.

Stokes has been bowling in practice and will be England’s third seamer behind Potts and Brydon Carse, his Durham teammates. “It could be a big week for the bowlers,” James Anderson, England’s bowling consultant, said on Sunday. “I don’t know about his full share… but he’s still looking to contribute a good amount of football.”

England’s seamers all had a tough job in the first Test, despite their winning innings: Atkinson bowled 39 overs, Carse 38 and Woakes 35. Atkinson and Woakes both played six Tests in the home summer of England and they are rested, with a short change between the same, while Carse should be very fresh after spending June, July and August serving the ban.

Ben Duckett retains his place at the top after recovering from a dislocated thumb on the second night of the first Test, while Jamie Smith will drop down to No.7 to allow Stokes to return to his favored role at No. 6.

England stuck with the same spinners – Jack Leach and Shoaib Bashir – despite Bashir’s quiet first Test, where he returned match figures of 1 for 156. Rehan Ahmed is another option to spin in their squad, while Warwickshire and England Under-19s. legspinner Tazeem Ali is on holiday in Pakistan and has been bowling in the nets this week.

England XI: 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Ben Stokes (captain), 7 Jamie Smith (wk), 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Matthew Potts, 10 Jack Leach, 11 Shoaib Bashir
