Pegula Surprised in Round Two

American Jessica Pegula, world no. 5suffered a stunning defeat in the second round of Wimbledon, losing to world No. 42 Wang Xinyu 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-1.

This was Wang’s third major at Wimbledon and his first Top 10 overcome.

In his court interview, after the game, he said: “A few days ago I was asking my coach, ‘When will this happen?’

Jessica had a really hard time playing in the grass. His ball was very low, and I’m very happy that I won in the end.”

In his press conference, Pegula said: “It’s not a very big day. I’m glad we won twice [with Coco Gauff]but it was clearly a difficult loss for the couple.

The conditions were especially, for single and double people, very, very difficult. It was very windy, that, of course, so I didn’t feel well today.”

Asked about his grass court season, Pegula said: “I mean it was fun because I won the tournament. [in Berlin], but obviously losing the second round here is not fair. I actually felt like I was playing better on grass than I had in the past, but for some reason it just didn’t seem to really click.

So, yeah, I’m not sure. It’s a little weird. It’s hard to say. I am happy to be able to say that I have a title, my first grass court title. Obviously the goal was there, and it didn’t come out, so that’s always disappointing.”

Pegula said the grass wasn’t always comfortable for him. “I just think there can be tricky bumps. Like the situation we are in today, the court was chewing a bit. It was fast. There can be many variables.

Also, it’s not like a real jump, so I think that would be difficult. Or if someone’s working well or a lot of enabling strings, you know, little things like that. I think those things are always a little frustrating.

I still love you. I definitely don’t have a bad relationship with it. I think it can be very difficult depending on the day. “
