Purse bids set for Haney Vs. Martin on June 18th: Record Controversy, and Career-Defining Decisions

WBC light welterweight champion Devin Haney’s next bout against mandatory challenger Sandor Martin is scheduled for June 18.

Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) must decide if he will go out, take the fight, or give the Spaniard Sandor Martin (42-3, 15 KOs) a step-side because his fight must be taken for the title he took last December. However, Martin, 30, is not expected to agree to step-side, but if they pay him enough, he may agree.

Assuming the fight does happen, it will be interesting to see Haney declared undefeated. It would look bad if Haney pretended to be an undefeated fighter when the whole world saw what happened to him in his embarrassing loss last April.

His management wanted to erase his loss to Ryan Garcia because of his positive PED test. Unfortunately, removing the L from Haney’s record would be unpopular, making him look like a manufactured fighter.

If Haney’s chin is messed up from the beating he took in his last loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20, he won’t make it through his fight with Sandor Martin without a knockout. It would be career over for Haney at that point, putting him in a bad situation from which he will never come back.

Bill Haney Tight-Lipped

Devin’s father, Bill Haney, failed to mention Martin’s name when asked Saturday who his son would fight next. This leads some to believe that Haney will not fight Martin next. It is believed that Bill does not want any part of his son to fight Sandor Martin, knowing that he is wrong and ruined his hard work to build him.

It’s a dangerous fight for Haney because if he loses to Martin, his career will be in the air, and he won’t be able to come back from this. Haney is too big to return to the lightweight division.

Fighting other champions at 140 isn’t a good move for Haney, as his resistance to boxing could make him vulnerable against talented belters:

– Subriel Matias
– Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz
– Teofimo Lopez

Welterweight: A Possible Escape?

If Haney chooses to move up to welterweight, he will need to do it soon to face WBC champion Mario Barrios before losing his belt to Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis or Brian Norman Jr.

Now is the time for Haney to step up before Boot or Norman Jr. take down Barrios because those guys will make easy work of the WBC champion. Haney will not want to feud with Boot or Norman of the WBC.

A WBC 147-lb title shot could be a useful asset for Haney to entice Ryan Garcia when he returns to the ring. He’s too big to fight at 140 or catchweight, so 147 is the only way a rematch between Haney and Ryan could happen.
