Rangers Add Promising Young Defenseman to EJ Emery – Hockey Writers – NHL Entry Draft

Last night, the New York Rangers made a significant addition to their roster by selecting EJ Emery with the 30th overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft. Emery, originally from Surrey, British Columbia, chose to represent the United States internationally. His father, Eric Emery, was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and made his mark in the Canadian Soccer League. EJ Emery, a standout product of the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP), is expected to continue his development next year at the University of North Dakota.

The power of defense

Emery, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 185 pounds, is a stay-at-home defenseman known more for his defensive prowess than his offensive contributions. During his time with the USNTDP, he recorded 22 points in 88 games, all of which were assists. Emery said he models his game after Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller, an apt comparison given Miller’s 6-foot-5, 210-pound frame.

Both players are excellent skaters who use their size and reach effectively to disrupt opposing players. Emery is particularly notable for his strong defending, often breaking up games before they develop and using his intangibles to close space quickly, rather than allowing his opponents to do so.

Progress in Offensive Contributions

While Emery’s offensive game is still developing, he made noticeable progress from his one-off draft season to his draft year. In his one-out draft season, he recorded 21 points in 99 games, compared to 22 points in 88 games the following season. These improved stats reflect his growing ability to contribute offensively. Emery’s speed allows him to jump effectively in transition. While he may never reach the heights of a player like Adam Fox or see much playing time, he has the potential to add offensive value to his game. If he continues to improve his offensive skills, he can reach the same level as Braden Schneider.

Psychology and Game Development

The difference between Emery’s defensive and attacking games is most evident in the way he approaches the game mentally. Defensively, he makes quick decisions and trusts his instincts, which serve him well throughout his position. Offensively, however, he is often hesitant and insecure, often taking too long with the puck. Early in the season, this hesitation led to struggles, especially when making decisions with the puck in his possession. However, as the year progressed, his skating ability became even more evident, and with increased confidence, he showed the ability to pull off effective pitches—an area the Rangers had notably struggled with during the playoffs.

Future Energy and Team Fit

Emery is probably two to three years away from making his NHL debut. If he reaches his full potential and becomes a shutdown defenseman, he will fit right in for the Rangers alongside Fox and Schneider. If Emery were ready for the NHL now, he would be a potential replacement for Jacob Trouba, who is currently traded. According to Larry Brooks, the Rangers and Detroit Red Wings are currently negotiating a deal to send the Rangers’ captain to Detroit (from Larry Brooks’ “Talk of Rangers trading Jacob Trouba to growing Red Wings,” The New York Post, June 29, 2024). Ethan Hétu, the US Regional Scout at McKeen’s Hockey, told me that Emery “projects to be a high defensive force” if everything goes well, in many ways similar to Ryan Lindgren but in the body of a “super athlete.” He added that “although Emery’s offense is still very much in question, his combination of size and movement gives him a real defence.” If Emery becomes a Lindgren-like player, Rangers will appreciate this pick.

At worst, Emery will still be a valuable low-level defender, capable of killing penalties and playing important minutes in late game situations. His size and defensive ability will ensure he can contribute even if he doesn’t reach his ceiling as a front four defender. His ability to play physically and use his reach effectively will allow him to make an impact in the NHL. Rangers’ defensive depth will be greatly improved with Emery in the mix, and he will provide insurance against injuries and other unforeseen circumstances. In addition, his presence in the lineup will bring stability and reliability, which is important for a team with championship aspirations. Coaching staff and fans alike will appreciate his dedication and efficiency as he transitions to a professional level.
