Ranji Trophy 2024-25 – Washington Sundar – ‘I see myself as a top order’

Washington Sundar began his first-class career for Tamil Nadu as an opener – a position he won in all five matches in his first Ranji Trophy season in 2016-17. Since then, however, he has hit mostly in the lower middle, sometimes as low as No. 8. But after hitting 152 at No.

“It was the management’s decision, and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Washington said with a bang. “I knew it would be a good opportunity for me to bat at number 3 and I’m glad I was able to contribute.

“I definitely see myself as a top batsman. I’m very happy with the kind of opportunity I got, to bat at number 3. For me, one thing is very important – I need to do anything for the team. What is required is a team game.

When Washington came out to bat, N Jagadeesan and Sai Sudharsan had put on 168. Washington and Sudharsan then added 232 for the second wicket.

Washington was 96 years old on the first day. When play resumed on Saturday, he didn’t take much time to complete his century. In the third over of the day, he guided Navdeep Saini between slip and gully for four to bring up his second first-class century.

After Sudharsan scored 213 runs, Washington and Pradosh Ranjan Paul added 92 for the fourth wicket. Tamil Nadu ended their innings at 674 for 6.

“Definitely, yes,” Washington said when asked if he would like to continue hitting at a high level. “I’ve been feeling very confident in my abilities and the way I’ve been batting in the last few years especially. I’ve just been trying to focus on what the team wants me to do, no matter what the situation is. But batting at the top of the order is great.”

Prior to this, Washington had the Indian team in a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh.

“It’s fun, isn’t it? You get to play all kinds and get a lot of opportunities,” he said.

“It’s more fun that way. Obviously, you have to do whatever you need to do to be able to change forms, especially in the white ball, but as top cricketers, we’re very grateful to have these challenges. It’s all about overcoming these challenges. If we successfully come out of these challenges, it’s very exciting.

“Obviously, Test cricket is the best way. Everyone appreciates it a lot. For me, red ball cricket means a lot. Hopefully, I can play more games and continue to do well.”
