Report: Luis Alberto Lopez Has Minor Brain Bleeding After Losing to Angelo Leo
Luis Alberto Lopez’s win and title reign ended in the worst way imaginable.
ESPN’s Mark Kriegel reported that the dethroned IBF featherweight was bleeding slightly after his Aug. 10 knockout loss to Angelo Leo. Their championship fight saw Leo counter with a well-timed left hook jab. Lopez was laid flat on his back where he stayed until referee Ernie Sharif waved his hand up for the contest.
Leo (25-1, 12 knockouts) entered the Tingley Coliseum in his hometown of Albuquerque as a huge crowd favorite. He has just won the IBF title and The Ring’s No.
Lopez (30-3, 17 KOs) has managed to win thirteen fights, although it is very little compared to the worst result. The diagnosis prompted the New Mexico Athletic Commission to place the Mexicali native on a 90-day suspension. It will likely be extended and a red flag next to his Federal ID, given the severity of the injury.
Three boxers have died this calendar year.
Japan’s Kazuki Anaguchi (6-1, 2 KOs) suffered a hematoma on the right side of his brain on Dec. 26 losing to Seiya Tsutsumi in Tokyo. Their Fight of the Year contender came at a high price. Anaguchi’s legs began to wobble as medical care found a horrific wound above his left eye. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors quickly performed a craniotomy. The 23-year-old suspect remained unconscious until his sudden death on February 2.
Congo’s Ardi Ndembo died on April 26, three weeks after being injured during a Team Combat League match on April 5 against Cuba’s Nestor Santana. Just two weeks later, England’s Sharif Lawal was pronounced dead just one day after losing by knockout in his professional debut on May 11. The fight was the first fight of the night, its tragic ending leading to the cancellation of another show.
The gruesome fate of South Africa’s Simiso Buthelezi was painfully seen in real time. The 24-year-old suspect held his belt in June 2022 for ten rounds of lightweight against Siphesihle Mntungwa. He drove his compatriot into the ropes, which caused the action to stop. Buthelezi then unusually followed the referee when the game was restarted and started punching the air. The competition was stopped immediately.
Buthelezi was brought to a local hospital, where he was diagnosed with a brain bleed. He died two days later on June 7, 2022.
Lopez won the IBF featherweight title with a points victory over Dis. 2022 defeating Josh Warrington on the road in Leeds, England. Three of his five title fights came in his hometown. In addition to Warrington and Leo, Lopez met Michael Conlan in his backyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It didn’t matter much in the end, as Lopez pulled off a highlight reel fifth round in his first title defense.
Wins over Joet Gonzalez and Reiya Abe followed before his shocking loss to Leo—even scarier, in retrospect.
The Ring joins the entire boxing community in wishing Lopez a speedy recovery and return to good health.
