Vasiliy Lomachenko may no longer be a top-rated pound-for-pound fighter, but the 36-year-old veteran remains The Ring’s No. 1-rated lightweight.
Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) earned the only title he has ever won with a dramatic 11th round stoppage of former Ring Magazine champion George Kambosos on May 11 in Perth, Australia.
The Ukrainian southpaw’s aggressiveness was too much for the scrappy Australian opponent to contend with.
Lomachenko won The Ring magazine lightweight champion on his way to unifying the WBA, WBC and WBO belts in an impressive two-year run in 2018-2019. Since losing a unanimous decision to Teofimo Lopez in 2020, he has won three of four fights – all in the 135-pound division – with the other loss being a controversial split to then-undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney last May.
“Vasiliy Lomachenko defeated George Kambosos before stopping the Australian in 11 rounds to win the vacant IBF title,” it said. Anson Wainwright. “Loma remains number 1, Kambosos has dropped to number 9.”

There is no arguing with Loma at No. 1, but the Panel members felt it was time for the tough but limited Kamboso to step out of the lightweight ranks.
“Kambosos has lost 3 of his last 4 and could have lost 4 of his last 4,” it noted. Adam Abramowitz. “It’s time for him to go. I think Sam Noakes or Mark Chamberlain are good players to come in at number 10.”
Tom Gray, Abraham Gonzalez, Michael Montero again Jake Donovan he agreed.
“Yes, I’m a George fan, but Maxi Hughes took him out of the box and he was ripped off,” he said. Gray. “He was a match (against Lomachenko) but because of his depth.
“I’ll go with Adam here and vote for Chamberlain.”
Added Gonzalez:
“I’m good at knocking Kambosos out of the equation. He had never fought before the (Lomachenko) fight.
“I like Adam’s recommendation to bring in Chamberlain.”
Montero proposed a third option for the No. 10.
“According to Adam’s acquisition, Kambosos is no longer a top 10 LW.
“However, I feel that Albert Batyrgaziev of Russia (10-0) has done more than Noakes, Chamberlain, [Floyd] Schofield and other top lightweight prospects to earn that No. 1 spot. 10. She faced better opposition as a professional and her novice career was good, culminating in a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics. The only problem is that he has not fought since last October. Hmmm…”
You have added your favorite Senior Editor:
“I agree that Batyrgaziev has a better CV than Chamberlain, but his inactivity worries me. Chamberlain fought in March and will see action this Saturday in Riyadh. I’m leaning towards Chamberlain, but I want to know if anyone else picks Batyrgaziev (or another up and coming lightweight).
Added Donovan:
“I agree with Adam’s suggestion that Kambosos needs to be withdrawn. I’m ‘slightly’ leaning towards Sam Noakes but agree with Adam (again) Mark Chamberlain a logical choice. He’s a coin, and there’s a good chance he’ll replace Noakes or another candidate we call number 10.”
Chamberlain (15-0, 11 KOs), a 25-year-old British fighter who faces Joshua Olawaseun Wahab on the Usyk-Fury undercard, replaces Kambosos in the lightweight division.
Two other points of business were presented by Donovan again Corey Erdmanwhich will be dealt with in the coming days.
“This may be for next week though Soslan Asbarovour number 8 cruiserweight, was found to have a prohibited substance,” it said Donovan. “His win over Aleksei Pepin in October was changed to a No-Contest and he now faces a six-year ban. Obviously you’ll need to break out of our Top 10, whether it’s next week’s update right now or the week after.”
Added Erdman:
“Michael Batyrgaziev’s proposal brings up a related issue for us to consider. Batyrgaziev beat Lazaro Alvarez in December, an obviously impressive win, but it was at an IBA Boxing event, and he fought at 132 pounds over ten rounds. In every practical way, it was a pro bout. Some bouts on IBA cards are full pro bouts that are sanctioned (ie Albert Ramirez-Lenin Castillo, Ali Akhmedov-Carlos Rivera, etc.) but some/most are not.
“In situations like this, do we consider this a win?”
