With four weeks to go until the trade deadline, much remains uncertain. Many teams still find themselves in the middle and will wait until the last few days to decide how much to buy or sell. That’s especially true in the National League, where nine teams are within six games of each other as they battle for the final two Wild Card spots. The Mets, Giants and Cubs are among the border contenders. It wouldn’t be particularly surprising to see any of them rise as sellers depending on how they play over the next few weeks.
The Mets are the NL’s top non-playing team and are hitting the deadline as a buyer right now. Getting a few games back on top at the end of the month could change that mindset. San Francisco and Chicago are still far away and are probably the best sellers. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer suggested late last week that the team would have to do better to avoid a sale. Why focus on those three specifically? Each has a notable player who would be desirable trade candidates if not for their contract structures.
