Rodrygo explains Ballon d’Or frustration
Rodrygo has admitted he feels ‘hurt’ after failing to make the Ballon d’Or shortlist despite enjoying a successful season with Real Madrid.
The Brazilian, who played a major role in Madrid’s double-winning season, lifting the La Liga and Champions League titles, was not included in the list of 30 players who were competing for this year’s Ballon d’Or award.
Madrid team-mates Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe, Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger and the retired Toni Kroos are all included in the squad, with Rodrygo missing out.
His inactivity even ‘surprises’ the 23-year-old player, who scored 17 goals in 51 games played for Madrid last season.
“I was upset, I think I deserved it,” said the midfielder ESPN. “I don’t want to underestimate the players who are there, but I think I have a place in the 30. It was a surprise. But there is not much I can do, I am not the one who decides these things.”
After the 30-man shortlist was announced, Rodrygo took to social media to post a selection of photos detailing his achievements in Madrid with the subtle caption of a laughing emoji. He later revealed that the post was meant to make fun of his Ballon d’Or tie.
He continued: “I made a funny text. Now there’s not much I can say. Everyone knows my anger. Everyone knows my anger. [has supported me]in the national team and in Real Madrid. People sent messages.”
Rodrygo scored one goal in Brazil’s 1-0 win over Ecuador in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier and is expected to feature in their match against Paraguay on Wednesday.
The midfielder has featured in all of Madrid’s games so far this season, registering one goal in five games.
