Ryan Harris has appointed the new South Australian men’s coach

Ryan Harris has been appointed as the new South Australian men’s coach, filling the vacancy left by Jason Gillespie earlier this year.

Harris, who began his playing career with the state, has been leading the men’s program on an interim basis for the past few months while his role was being hired and will take over full-time as soon as the season gets underway.

It has not yet been confirmed who will be the coach of the Adelaide Strikers BBL (Gillespie has held both positions) but it is clear that the division of labor is increasing. Tim Paine has confirmed he is interested in a Strikers role if that is the case.

“I am delighted and honored to be appointed as the Head Coach of South Australia where I started my professional playing journey more than 20 years ago,” said Harris. “Having worked closely with the team last summer and during our pre-season training, I know what this team is capable of and I can’t wait to get started and build on the positive steps we saw last year.

“Under new captain Nathan McSweeney, there is a real sense of confidence in the squad and we will work hard to ensure we hit the ground running as the new season fast approaches.”

South Australia finished fifth in the Sheffield Shield last season after finishing fourth in 2022-23 following five consecutive wooden spoons. They were bottom of the Marsh Cup after reaching the final last season.

There is a chance to see internationals Travis Head and Alex Carey at the start of the Sheffield Shield window in October.

After retirement, Harris took part in coaching with the Australian men’s under-19 team for the 2018 and 2020 World Cups and has also worked in the IPL with Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Capitals. He also had a mentoring role with the men’s team when Justin Langer was the coach.

In 2021 he was appointed as the manager of Queensland Cricket. He applied to become Australia Women’s coach when Matthew Mott left, having a short stint as New Zealand’s bowling coach in 2021, but was rejected before returning to South Australia to become their bowling coach.
