Saba Karim names two possible candidates for India’s T20I captaincy

To follow Rohit Sharma‘s retirement from T20Is after ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024speculation is rife as to who will replace him as the captain of Team India.

The issue of leadership has become a question for fans and experts. As the Indian cricket team awaits an official announcement, the debate continues as to who will take the mantle and lead India into a new era in T20Is.

Saba Karim chooses two potential candidates

In an interview with Sony Sports, the former Indian cricketer and selector We are Karim shared his views on potential candidates for the captaincy position. “The first thing that needs to be decided is who will be the captain in the T20I. Rohit Sharma has retired, so we will have a new captain. I hear that there are two contenders,” said Karim.

He elaborated on his decisions, highlighting the logical choice of Hardik Pandya. “Logically, Hardik Pandya should be the captain; he was the vice-captain in the campaign to win the World Cup. He has captained India before,” said Karim.

However, the veteran wicketkeeper once again put up another powerful player, Suryakumar Yadav. “I feel there will be talks about Surya Kumar Yadav as the new T20I captain. He captained the team against Australia in the home series in November 2023 when Hardik Pandya was injured and performed well, making him a viable option,” Karim added.

Proven leaders of Team India

Both Pandya and Suryakumar played a key role in India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit’s captaincy. Their performance has cemented their places as key players in the team.

Pandya’s captaincy credentials are well established. He took the lead Gujarat Titans (GT) to their first IPL win in 2022 and took them to the final in 2023. In the latest edition of the IPL, Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians (MI)where he was named the new captain, showing his leadership skills again.
