Scott Styris hints at Shubman Gill’s succession as the next captain of Team India

The old one New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris he raised an eyebrow at his assessment IndiaThe latest captaincy appointment. In an interview with India Today, Styris suggested that Suryakumar Yadavthe T20I captain’s rise may be a temporary measure, with Shubman Gill being raised as a long time fan.

Shubman Gill: The future captain

Styris was impressed with Gill’s leadership skills, given his role as captain of the IPL franchise Gujarat Titans.

“Look, the vice-captain is someone who learns everything about leadership and how to run a cricket team. I have no problem with Shubman Gill being the vice-captain. He is the captain in the IPL. He is a captain with many names, so there is no problem with that,” said the thrower.

However, the Kiwi legend also warned that Gill’s batting needs to improve before he can shoulder the weight of captaincy.

“Shubman Gill still has a lot of growth to do in his game. We have seen a really high-quality performance from India, but now it is about consistency across those three formats. So it’s almost like letting him learn to be a captain. We are looking at you in the future, but for now we want you to focus on your cricket,” Styris pointed.

Suryakumar Yadav: A bridge to the future

The veteran Kiwi believes that Surya’s appointment as captain is the right move by the Indian team management. Suryakumar’s blistering batting and experience have made him a huge asset to the team, and his role as captain seems like a logical progression. But, according to Styris, it’s a stop-gap plan.

“I think he is a temporary solution. I don’t think Gambhir has a natural captaincy among the players he has right now. So, you’re buying time for who will be the long-term captain,” said the cricket commentator.

Calculated gambling

The former New Zealand all-rounder believes that the Indian selectors have played their cards smart.

“You know, someone like Gill I think can do a 10-year job in India, but he’s not ready yet, so I think it was a really smart decision to bring in someone with more experience. Someone like Suryakumar makes him a captain. If he does a good enough job, he can be the captain in the next T20 World Cup. Then after that, you can look at Gill or other possible options. But yes, I think it’s a really smart decision,” he concluded.

Styris’ comments sparked a debate among cricket fans and pundits alike. While some believe that Suryakumar is a capable leader who can guide the team to success, others feel that Gill’s potential is being overlooked.
