Scottie Scheffler and his player, Ted Scott, have made the team the last few years – a string of wins, two Players Championship victories and two Masters titles.
Their collaboration started with a mutual phone call from a mutual friend.
“That was one of the things [Scottie] he told me on the phone, ‘I love the big moments,’” said Scott, during an appearance on this week’s GOLF Subpar podcast. “And you have to love the big moments. If you don’t, don’t go in big time if you don’t like it. You will feel stress, and you have to enjoy that.”
One of Scheffler’s biggest moments as a professional came at the 2022 Masters, when he won his first major title. Sure, he had won the WM Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in the previous two months – proving he was a top talent – but the Masters is the Masters, and until then he still had one. he won the big one.
You may recall that Scheffler cruised that week at Augusta National. He led Cam Smith by three heading into the final round and held a five-shot lead from the 18th tee. You may also remember what happened next – Scheffler’s viral four-putt on the final green.
His friend, Scott, also learned a lesson that day.
“That was my fault; I completely distracted him,” Scott said on the podcast. “I heard a caddy tell me one time, ‘We were like 4 up at Augusta, so I told my pro, go ahead and take it all,’ and I was like, that’s a really cool guy. He let his caddy go, and I said, ‘I’m going to do it.’ that is if I ever get that chance.
“And indeed, we wake up from there [on 18 at Augusta] and I’m like, ‘Hey man, take it all from your friend. He is really sick.’ So he goes and likes to look and it’s pretty neat, and we were both standing in front of the green when Cam was putting, and I’m like, ‘This is pretty special, man.’ And the next thing you know he’s in a sword fight and I’m like, ‘Wow, let’s not go all in yet! Let’s put this thing in the hole and we will put it all in.”
Fortunately, Scheffler had some shots to play with. A four-putt double-bogey didn’t hurt him, and he won his first green jacket by three.
“I tried to keep my head down and keep doing what I was doing because I didn’t want to lose my mind,” Scheffler said afterward. “The moment I did it was on the 18th green when I finally got there and I had a five-shot lead and I said, okay, now I can enjoy this. And you’ve seen the results of that.” [Laughs]
