Senator news and rumors: Dorion, Eliasson, Ullmark – Hockey Writers – Column

Welcome back to Ottawa Senators news and rumors. In this edition, we will look at Pierre Dorion’s name from the media, but instead of working for a team, he will join a radio station based in Montreal. Elsewhere, an update was given on Linus Ullmark and his injury, while Gabriel Eliasson has been traded to the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League.

Pierre Dorion Goes From NHL General Manager To Radio Co-Host

It is reported that former Senators general manager (GM) Dorion has joined BPM Sports. A program on the radio called “Le Retour Des Sportifs” is hosted by Martin Lemay, and Dorion is expected to be a regular guest on the show.

Dorion was GM of the Senators for eight seasons in which the Senators missed the playoffs in all but one of them. His first season as head coach was the 2016-17 season when the Senators made a memorable trip to the Eastern Conference Final. From there, the team went down the rankings and learned to rebuild longer than many had hoped or imagined.

When the new owner, Michael Andlauer, came in, his goal was to reshape the Senators’ front office, and the final straw that led to Dorion’s firing was the team being forced to give up a first-round pick for the team’s bottom line. Evgenii Dadonov was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights for which Dorion allegedly did not report the no-trade clause included in the contract.

Since he was fired from the Senate, there hasn’t been much noise about Dorion. He disappeared from the media, his name did not appear to open up to the media, he appeared to have disappeared. Now that he will be a regular on the air, it will be interesting to hear what stories he will share from his time in Ottawa.

Ullmark is “100% Ready” to Play After Minor Injury

Star goaltender Ullmark met with the media on Wednesday and said he is ready to play, and hopes to play in the Senators’ third preseason game with the Buffalo Sabres, his former team. As the morning skate lines are reported by Bruce Garrioch, goaltender Dustin Tokarski, who is on a professional tryout, is at the starting end, but Ullmark is a full participant in the practice.

Ullmark missed the last few practices, and has yet to play in a preseason game. This was causing some concern among fans, but reports say that Ullmark did something in camp, and played it safe to prevent it from getting worse. The exact injury remains undisclosed, but everything points to Ullmark being fine, and ready to go when called upon, whether it’s against the Sabers or before the season against another team.

Eliasson Traded to Colts

Senators defensive prospect Eliasson, who was recently selected in the second round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, was traded from the Niagra Ice Dogs to the Barrie Colts for the third and 15th picks. Eliasson participated in Senators camp, and while he didn’t get in any preseason action before being sent down to Junior, he got a lot of good experience.

Eliasson is a 6-foot-7 monster who plays an extremely physical game. AthleticScott Wheeler interviewed Eliasson and talked about what makes him such a unique player. (from “What makes Senators’ Gabriel Eliasson, hockey’s worst prospect, tick? His critics.”, The Athletic, Sept. 25, 2024)

Among many other things, Eliasson told Wheeler that his biggest asset is his competitiveness. He said it’s not just winning the game, but winning all the battles, and that’s what drives him to play as physically as he does.

Eliasson is not the most productive player on the scoresheet, but with his defense and physicality, he is a player that every team needs. The Colts are getting bigger and more aggressive, and Eliasson will help the blue line a lot.

The start of the regular season is right around the corner, and there are still many moving pieces for the Senators. Check back next time for all the latest Senators news and gossip.
