Shakur Stevenson and Eddie Hearn to Hold Press Conference in Los Angeles Next Week
Shakur Stevenson and his new promoter, Eddie Hearn, will hold a press conference next week in Los Angeles to discuss Shakur’s next Matchroom fight against Joe Cordina on October 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The date will be announced soon.
Confidence Booster and Stepping Stone
Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) and former IBF super featherweight champion Cordina (17-1, 9 KOs) will share a card with United light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev and WBA champion Dmitry Bivol at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh. Season of Turki Alalshikh.
Hearn has yet to say whether he plans to re-sign Shakur to a long-term deal after ending his one-on-one fight with Cordina. He says he wants to make him a world star, but it’s not clear who he can match him to in foreign non-Matchroom fights.
Shakur’s exciting fights will include fighters such as William Zepeda, Gervonta Davis, and Vasily Lomachenko. Those guys aren’t with Hearn, but they’d be willing to fight Shakur if the money was right.
The plan is to put Shakur in this strong confidence against Cordina to help increase his stock with fans and match him with William Zepeda. Then if Shakur wins those two, try and put together a deal with Gervonta Davis.
Stevenson’s Ego and Pride
Shakur will likely need to sign with PBC to get a Tank fight, and even then, it will depend on negotiations. Stevenson’s pride and arrogance can lead to him overestimating himself and losing the Tank battle.
The problem is that Shakur feels he is on the same level as Tank Davis because of his three division world titles and his WBC belt. Those things mean nothing. Shakur still can’t sell and is nowhere near Tank level.
“Through Matchroom and Riyadh Season, I am partnering with an inspiring team that complements my world-class talent,” Shakur said. “We will not be caught in and out of the ring, and I will continue to show my dominance for many years to come in the sport of boxing.”
Hearn’s Ham-Handed Marketing Strategies
Hearn is excited about Shakur’s new player, as he was with Demetrius Andrade when he signed him to Matchroom in 2019. He has failed to learn from the past and is steering Shakur’s career in the same direction.
When Hearn signed Andrade, he was excited about the power, but instead of taking advantage, he compared him to three English fighters, and his popularity faltered.
Hearn appeared surprised when Andrade failed to win over fans. Now, Hearn is making the same mistake as Shakur by comparing him to a British fighter, which will not increase his popularity with American fans. It will hurt Shakur’s popularity because he will probably look bad.
Sharp cycles in the bank today 🔪
