Sheffield Shield 2024/25, QLD vs SOA 5th Match Report, October 20 – 23, 2024

South Australia 314 & 352 for 9 (Carey 123*, McSweeney 72, Whitney 3-62) lead Queensland 308 (Peirson 94, McDermott 52) by 358 runs

Test wicketkeeper Alex Carey fired another warning shot for India with an unbeaten century against South Australia in the Sheffield Shield against Queensland.

Already in hot form to start the red-ball summer, Carey was again the big motivator on day three, hitting 123 not out from 163 deliveries as SA stormed to a 358-run lead at the Allan Border Field. Captain Nathan McSweeney continued his good form making 72 to push his case for a Test call-up.

The announcement comes overnight, with undefeated speedster Jordan Buckingham in the spot alongside Carey.

At the end of the game, Carey averaged 122 in four innings this summer as a boon for Australian middle-order Cameron Green in the absence of the fifth Test series against India starting next month.

Undeterred by the new second ball, Carey notched his second century of the summer by blasting paceman Mark Steketee for three consecutive boundaries in the final hour of play on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old took the most wickets at over-deep mid-wicket with four over extra cover to score 90 and three figures. He capped a good day at the crease by hitting his favorite victim Steketee for six over deep mid-wicket in the last over.

Earlier, Carey brought up his half-century by pulling Tom Whitney’s short ball to the boundary in a rare difficult manner for a paceman.

Carey raised his bat in just 67 games, showing his intention to pick up where McSweeney left off before Usman Khawaja took over the South Australian captaincy from Mitchell Swepson.

Whitney backed up his five-wicket haul from the first innings with three crucial scalps early in the third day before a minor heel injury prevented him from bowling when Carey kicked off in the afternoon.

Whitney dismissed opener Conor McInerney lbw early on the third day, before cleaning up Nathan McAndrew’s middle stump with his first ball after lunch after the late night watcher held on stubbornly in the first session.

Whitney’s figures of 8 for 119 in all innings were the third best by a Queensland debutant in Sheffield Shield history.

Looking on since he didn’t play in the Australia A team, Test hopeful Matt Renshaw grabbed the title late in the third day – but not by batting.

The towering Renshaw dived to midwicket to take a stunning catch to dismiss Jake Lehmann off medium pacer Marnus Labuschagne.

Labuschagne joined would-be Test opener Renshaw on the highlight reel with a catch over his head to send Liam Scott packing and help Queensland through the bowlers.
