Southampton manager Russell Martin has signed a three-year contract with the new Premier League players

Russell Martin has signed a new three-year contract with Southampton.

Martin, 38, took charge of Saints last summer before taking them back to the Premier League in his first season with a Championship final win over Leeds.

The former Swansea and MK Dons boss guided Southampton to a fourth-place finish in the league, overseeing a historic 25-game unbeaten run.

His coaches Matt Gill, Dean Thornton, Colin Calderwood, Carl Martin, Rhys Owen and Ben Parker have also signed new contracts with the club.

Martin said: “First of all, I really want to thank the owners and Phil [Parsons]. When the season ended, they expressed a desire to talk to me and the coaching staff about a long-term plan, and it just made me feel like we’re together and that we’re really aligned, we’re really together in the plan and ‘We’re going to attack the Premier League in our own way, so it’s really exciting.

“I feel like we have learned a lot as a team as a team.

“I feel that there is so much that makes me happy that when we started talking there was no question for me and the coaches what they should do.

“It was like ‘Yeah, let’s do this’ and everything tied up quickly and I’m really excited for next season.”

Chairman Henrik Kraft added: “We were confident when Russell was appointed that he would be a great fit for the team and his first 12 months here have certainly proved that to be the case.

“He had a great impact on and off the field, which resulted in him being promoted to the memorial in one of the most competitive seasons of the tournament.

“As we return to the Premier League, and after the achievements of last season, we felt it necessary to emphasize the commitment between us.

“We know that historically, the promoted teams will face a real battle for survival in the Premier League, but we are excited to see how the team embraces the challenge ahead this year under Russell’s continued guidance.”
