In the post-match presentation, the leg-spinner credited his teammates for laying the foundation for his success, but also acknowledged the pressure of replacing a key player like Hasaranga.

“There was a lot of pressure coming from the side. I was leaving work. I had to do something. It’s easy to take credit but I want to praise the batsmen for playing the way they did and getting us to that number. It allowed me to throw that way. Undoubtedly, Wanindu Hasaranga is the number one spinner. I understood about the selection and rating of the team and all that. I had to keep motivating myself. If that is necessary to play for the nation, I will do that,” Vandersay said.

The 24-year-old also revealed that he is focusing on sticking to the basics and maintaining a good figure and height. “I tried to do the basics right. I had to throw good lines and lengths. When I got the first wicket, it gave me confidence.”

He admitted that dismissing the Indian captain who was well-set and opener, Rohit Sharmait boosted his confidence early on.

“Once I took the first wicket [Rohit Sharma], my confidence grew. I continued to bowl in the right places and, luckily, I managed to get six wickets,” the right-arm spinner was added after receiving the Player of the Match award.

The series will culminate in the third ODI decider on Wednesday (August 7) ​​at the same venue. Although Sri Lanka will be determined to defend the 50 overs leg, India must fight to level the series.
