Stapleford Park closes soon – Golf News
Stapleford Park, a historic Grade I listed country house hotel near Melton Mowbray, ceased operations on October 16, 2024, after its owners, the DreamR Group, called in liquidators due to ongoing financial challenges.
The owners of the prestigious four-star hotel and country lodge have cited “poor trading conditions” as the reason for the immediate closure. DreamR Group, which acquired the property two years ago, has now enlisted insolvency practitioner Leonard Curtis to handle the company’s entry into voluntary liquidation.
In a statement sent to members last week, the hotel announced its closure and termination of all club memberships, effective immediately. The email read: “It is with great regret that we have to inform you that Stapleford Park Hotel will cease trading with effect from 16 October 2024, and your club membership will be terminated with immediate effect.”
The statement continued: “Unfortunately, due to the adverse trading and financial conditions of the operating company, Stapleford Park Limited, the hotel is unable to continue operating, and the management has no choice but to cease trading with the hotel immediately, including club membership.”
DIFFICULTY AFTER GOLF COURSE CLOSING
Stapleford Park is a luxury estate set in 500 acres of parkland designed by renowned landscape architect Capability Brown. The property has long been considered a country retreat, with 48 guest bedrooms, two private cottages, an acclaimed restaurant, and a luxurious spa center.
Despite its illustrious history and good causes, the hotel is struggling financially under the ownership of the DreamR Group. Earlier this year, DreamR signed a management agreement with Bristol-based M&T Hotel Management, a hotel management and consulting services company, in a bid to turn around the hotel’s fortunes. Unfortunately, the partnership could not prevent the closing of the hotel.
Stapleford Park’s 6,944-yard, par-73 golf course, which was designed by Donald Steel and opened in 2000 while boasting Sam Torrance as a Touring Professional, had already closed in 2020, continuing to reflect the area’s financial difficulties in recent years.
The closure of Stapleford Park marks the end of the area’s era as a popular getaway for visitors and members alike. As the liquidation process continues, the future of the building remains uncertain.
