Steph Curry signed a massive one-year contract extension with Golden State worth $62.6 million to stay in The Bay for the 2026-27 NBA season, but his expectations have not changed.
This massive contract makes Curry the first NBA player to earn more than $60M in a single season.
But for him it’s business as usual.
“It’s still about winning and taking the necessary steps to give ourselves a chance,” Curry said Athletic. “The standard has not changed. The expectations have not changed.”
The Warriors failed to make the finals last year and despite losing Klay Thompson, they added sharpshooter Buddy Hield, guard De’Anthony Melton and veteran forward Kyle Anderson.
The extension quells rumors that Steph is joining LeBron James at the Lakers or leaving the team to join the most successful of his dark years.
“It’s no different in my opinion,” Curry said Athletic. “You enjoy the position and the opportunity and the support of the people who have been with you on the journey. I have always said that I want to play for one team my whole career. So it’s good to get rid of the (extension) question and focus completely on basketball and the season.”
Steph will be 39 at the end of his new contract – the same age LeBron is now.
Therefore, he could have had a lot of gas left in the tank at that time.
Golden State now has the tall task of providing Curry with a title-contending team — they just don’t look like one right now.
The Warriors front office tried to trade Paul George and Lauri Markkanen in the summer – two quality players for Steph to play with.
