Sunderland scupper bid for Mexican talent

Looking back at Liverpool’s transfer business this summer, fans could be forgiven for one disappointment this season in Federico Chiesa.

Not that the Italian international isn’t a worthy addition to the club, more that he is the only addition as Giorgi Mamardashvili won’t arrive until next summer.

Not one more player could have been added before the deadline, but Championship leaders Sunderland snubbed the deal.

Liverpool’s chase lost to Sunderland

It is understood that the Reds wanted to sign exciting Mexican star Cesar Huerta, known as ‘Chino,’ but the intention was to simply loan him to the Black Cats.

“El Chino was tested by one of the best teams in the world and that is a source of pride,” Huerta’s manager, Gustavo Lema, confirmed to TUDN, after UNAM lost Monday’s big game against Tigres.

“What will you tell the people? That you have a player who has been scouted by Liverpool? No, people want to win and that is their right. We will not tell people anything,”

Arne Slot was interested in the Liverpool left-back

The news that Liverpool were close to a player with a total G/A of 52 in his 187-game career (transfermarkt) sheds new light on how active Arne Slot and his backroom staff were in the summer.

Traditionally a left winger, at just 23 years old the player was being groomed for the future and possibly a replacement for Mo Salah.

The Egyptian king has less than a year left on his contract, and it doesn’t appear that anyone is in a rush to sign a new one.

Of course, there will always come a time when the club’s legends continue, so perhaps Liverpool are betting less this time.

Unfortunately, Sunderland would not be playing football this time around and loaned the player out, meaning the deal fell through.
