Suryakumar behind India’s Super Over heist: I told the team that I have seen such kind of games
Suryakumar’s innovation as captain – relying on two young bowlers to bowl the last two overs – pushed the match into the Super Over, where he scored the winning runs. Presenting his speech, he said that he believes that a win is possible even though India has only 137 players on the board.
“Beyond that, I feel we’re at 30 for 4 and 48 for 5, the way the boys showed character in the middle and took the game away from them, I felt 140 was about right on that track and the way they did it. When we entered the game time, I told them that I have seen such kinds of games and I think that if we put our hearts into it for one and a half hours we can pull it off.
All three of these games provided conditions conducive to spin which Suryakumar may have included in his calculations because his bowling in the 20th over was far from the plan.
“I think all the work I’ve done, and the many blessings from God have helped me,” Washington said. “I wanted to try and stay calm and focus on what I had to do and I’m very grateful to Surya in particular for throwing me the ball for that. [Super Over] situation.
“We did a little bit of homework against their batsmen. There was obviously a bit of buy in the wicket too, so I didn’t have to do too much. I had to hit the right length every time. The rest was there.”
Suryakumar’s willingness to try unconventional things was evident even in previous matches, when he turned to Parag’s part-time to bowl him in the death overs in previous matches. Parag is India’s second most used bowler in the series (9.2 overs), behind only Ravi Bishnoi (12 overs). He is very pleased with the way his wounds are coming out.
“I’ve been working on it,” Parag said. “It took some time. I tried it at home games. I had a few sessions before the tournament and it was going really well. I just showed myself. Surya bye he said just go. I threw it freehand and it went really well.”
Parag’s program in the third T20I, where he bowled four overs for 27 runs was simple. “It’s always easy to get carried away when it turns too much so the goal and the idea of today’s bowling was to keep it explosive, I got a lot of revs behind the ball and the wicket was helping so I didn’t make it. I have to do more. I had to hit the right places bye and Surya in the end [laughs]”
