T20 World Cup 2024 – Florida Weather – USA vs Ireland, Canada vs India, Ireland vs Pakistan may be affected

Weather may play a major role in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in Florida, where three Group A matches are scheduled in the next three days. The tropical disturbance has brought a rare flood emergency to parts of southern Florida, including Broward County where the sports venue – Lauderhill – is located.

The first World Cup match at the stadium – Nepal vs Sri Lanka – has been washed away, while three others – USA vs Ireland, Canada vs India and Ireland vs Pakistan – may also be affected, as the forecast suggests heavy rain everywhere.

According to the US National Weather Service (NWS), a “flood watch” remains in effect for all of southern Florida until Friday evening. The matches will be played at 10.30 am local time.

“Heavy to heavy rain in southern Florida may continue to bring localized flooding and urban flooding, with possible localized flooding, at times this weekend,” the NWS wrote in the X.

Although India have sealed the Super Eight after defeating the USA on Wednesday, the other teams in Group A – USA, Canada, Ireland and Pakistan – will be fighting for another place.

As things stand, all four teams can still qualify statistically.

Pakistan, who have finally reached the finals of the 2022 World Cup, have won one of their three matches so far, but can advance to the next round if they beat Ireland and lose to the USA. If one of these washes out, then the USA, the two-time winner, will go in. Canada (one win in three) and Ireland (none in two) are bottom of the table.

The June 11 washout also affected Group D, leaving Sri Lanka and Nepal on the brink of elimination.

A minimum of five overs is required for a match and there are no set dates for group stage matches. The first and final semi-finals have deadlines but the second does not, as there is a gap of one day between that game and the final.
