T20 World Cup 2024 – Huge crowds gather in and around Wankhede ahead of the arrival of the Indian team

Thousands thronged Mumbai’s Marine Drive, and the Wankhede stadium was almost full, awaiting the parade of the Indian team bus and the excitement of winning the T20 World Cup on Thursday evening. The team’s arrival in Mumbai from Delhi was delayed, however, and their bus rally in South Mumbai was also delayed by crowds, causing challenges to host the event.

“The team arrived in the city after 5 pm,” PTI reported, adding, “According to the plan shared by local officials, the T20 World Cup winning team was expected to travel by bus for two hours from the National. Center for Performing Arts (NCPA) at Nariman Point to at the Wankhede Stadium from 5pm to 7pm.

“However, it has been found that the team can leave New Delhi at 3.42pm.” Delhi to Mumbai is usually a 2-hour, 10-minute flight.

The team had arrived in Delhi from Bridgetown, Barbados, at 6 am, flying in on a chartered plane after a long stay in the West Indies due to Cyclone Beryl, which forced the airports to be closed. After arriving in Delhi, the delegation was transferred to the hotel and later in the morning met the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi for breakfast.

The night had been reserved for fans to meet and celebrate, but with thousands lining the route to the stadium, and night showers in Mumbai adding to scheduling problems, there is expected to be a long delay before the celebrations begin.

India won their first World Cup – ODI or T20 – in 13 years when they thrashed South Africa by seven runs in Bridgetown on Saturday. Since then captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja have announced that they will not play another T20I, and this World Cup was also coach Rahul Dravid’s last assignment with the team.
