T20 World Cup – USA’s Super Over bowled against Pakistan
Amir will throw a Super. Jones and Harmeet will open. Remember: both teams have two wickets. There is a reversal of procedures – the USA, chasing, will strike first. If this ends in a draw, we will have another Super Over.
0.1 Amir to Aaron Jones, FOUR runs Amir starts with a wide one but Jones manages to get to it. It slowly entered the field, and came out in third place out of four. A big advantage for the USA!
0.2 Amir to Aaron Jones, 2 runs He nails an on-pace yorker but Jones manages to brilliantly flick the flick to midwicket. They went back twice
0.3 Amir to Aaron Jones, 1 run
Pakistan, as they do at the death, stick to the yorker system. This is encrypted. Speed too. Jones can’t do anything about that. It jams a foot or two forward but that allows one to spread out
0.4 Amir to Harmeet Singh, 2 wides Amir misses his line (and length) and concedes a wide cover. It could have been worse but Harmeet missed the roll on a full toss down the leg. Rizwan can’t collect well, runs one
0.4 Amir to Aaron Jones, 1 run Jones crosses to try to get inside the line. He gets a full toss down the stumps, flips it to deep square leg. Just one
0.5 Amir to Harmeet Singh, 2 wides Amir remembers, Harmeet remembers. Everyone is disappointed but this is in USA’s favor. A full toss down the leg, goes past as he tries to flip. Another bye is stolen
0.5 Amir to Aaron Jones, 2 runs On the field, it’s wide too. Jones meets the cut. Sweeper runs to the right, Amir shouts as they return to the second throw (which was at the keeper’s end)
0.6 Amir to Aaron Jones, 3 wides 5 breaks for Jones. Buzzers too, USA does this with unforced errors. Jones cleared the front leg but saw a full ball, angled, to be outside the tram line and let it go. The batsmen run when Rizwan lifts it up, too far for Amir to collect but no one backs up. They stole two bays!
0.6 Amir to Aaron Jones, 1 run, OUT Amir looks for a yorker. It’s in stuff and it’s cut to square leg. Jones comes back a second time, which never works, and fails to make it. But it was definitely needed
USA bowled a Super Over. Amir stuck to the short but could not do it by such good margins. There were only four but they ended up with 18.
The USA started the campaign with a win over Canada, and a win today would not only increase their position in the table, but also record history. All the players are waiting in the park, and Pakistan seems to be undecided about who to send. There is a long discussion between the USA players and the umpire – perhaps because Pakistan’s batsmen are taking so long to come out to bat – before Iftikhar and Fakhar come out to chase 19.
0.1 Netravalkar to Iftikhar, no run Iftikhar falls, and the bowler follows. Netravalkar goes full and puts it across, the ball finishes outside off. But Iftikhar was too wide as he tried to climb, but missed. So the range is not called
0.2 Netravalkar to Iftikhar, FOUR runs It rolled between the long and deep midwife! Netravalkar bowled it down a length on mid-on, but Iftikhar waited before pulling hard in the gap for four.
0.3 Netravalkar to Iftikhar, 1 wide This is extensive! This time Iifthikar doesn’t move too much, and he sees this yorker length ball go past him. You leave it alone, and it is given widely
0.3 Netravalkar to Iftikhar, OUT Wow, great catch! Subfielder Milind Kumar takes a good catch! Placed at a distance, it took a few steps forward before landing and holding it slightly above the ground. However, the final decision will be made by the third referee. He sees a lot of replays, and the ball almost falls into his hands. Now the TV referee is looking at it differently. The ball dips and dies to Milind, who uses both hands to try and catch it. And after spending a lot of time, it is given! This is what happened earlier: Netravalkar had bowled a low full toss, which hung across, as Ifthikar started down. But the length seemed too full for him to shoot
Iftikhar Ahmed c Kumar b Netravalkar 4 (3b 1×4 0x6)
Shadab in. Pakistan need 14 from 3 balls, as Shadab takes his time.
0.4 Netravalkar to Shadab, 1 wide And it is another dimension. This is angled across, and sits at the length of the yorker wide. Shadab lets it go
0.4 Netravalkar to Shadab, 4 leg byes Oh, lucky for Pakistan! Shadab crossed the stumps to try to sweep this, but the ball went off the toes between the keeper and short third.
0.5 Netravalkar to Shadab, 2 runs Ah, well cast! This is a beautiful yorker that hangs straight on and on, and Shadab manages to lift it just between long-on and long-on. They pinched two
Pakistan need 7 to 1. Six means another Super Over!
0.6 Netravalkar to Shadab, 1 run USA won by five runs! The first upset of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The USA players made their presence felt by shouting their emotions. Their atmosphere is filled with celebration and joy, even as the Pakistan dressing room is left wondering what could have been.
