WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis weighed in at 133.4 lbs, while challenger Frank Martin came in at 134.4 pounds at Friday’s weigh-in for their headliner this Saturday night at PBC on -Prime Video PPV.
Benavidez and Gvozdyk Fight for WBC Interim Title Fight
David Benavidez weighed in at 174.2 in the bantamweight division, and former WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk weighed in at 174.2 in their 12-round fight for the WBC 175-lb interim title.
Up front, Gvozdyk looks bigger and more muscular than Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs), who looked like he was carrying more fat around his midsection.
Benavidez usually makes weight between fights, but he didn’t have to cut as much as he usually does because he moved up to the 175-lb division.
Benavidez’s Size Advantage Absent
It’s surprising to see Benavidez not have much of a chance over his opponent because he usually looks like he has two big divisions. We’ll see how Benavidez handles fighting someone of his size, superior strength, and superior technical skills.
For many fans, Benavidez-Gvozdyk is more interesting than the main event between Tank and Martin because it is expected to be competitive. Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) is considered to be getting the fight because he is in the PBC.
The event begins at 8:00 pm ET/5:00 pm PT this Saturday, June 15, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
“There is a reason why he ignores him because they have a history. They punched, Benavidez had his way. He even punched Gvozdyk until he dumped him,” said webmaster Teddy Atlas on Probox TV, talking about David Benavidez who dated Oleksandr Gvozdyk years ago.
“There’s a chance he’s overconfident, and I like Benavidez,” Atlas said. “It is possible that they are looking towards him [Gvozdyk]. We don’t know if he can beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk. We don’t know if he can surpass the winner of Bivol vs. Beterbiev.
“I see him developing into what I think he will be. I think he will be the face of the sport if he can continue this winning streak,” said Chris Algieri about Benavidez. “I think he’ll be fine at 175, but we saw how his body reacts at a different weight class.
“If you’re in a different weight class, you’re a different machine.”
