The Netherlands aim to improve after the post-mortem of the group stage

Memphis Depay says there was tension in the Netherlands camp following the team’s poor performance at Euro 2024 but insists the players are now “looking forward”.

The Dutch finished third in Group D after one win from three games – and that required a late Wout Weghorst goal to win in Poland. France drew 3-2 with Austria which means they progressed as one of the top four third-place finishers.

Depay revealed that there have been many internal discussions about their form.

“The competition is just starting now,” said Depay, who is on a free transfer after leaving Atletico Madrid.

“We have to make sure we learn from our mistakes. We have had discussions and criticized each other and it is normal to have arguments when the results do not go the way you want them to go. It makes sense that there would be resentment.

“But that’s behind us now. There is a good atmosphere in the team and we are looking forward.”

Ronald Koeman’s side face Romania in the last 16 on Tuesday and the Netherlands coach has backed Depay to do well after being criticized for his performance in Germany.

Depay continued: “I feel the coach’s confidence and I would like to pay him.” It is really important that he gets the support of the man who appoints the team.”
