The odd competition David Feherty and Stevie Williams played against Tiger Woods

Gary McCord will probably be the first to admit that you can’t have fun at golf tournaments like he used to back in the day. And legendary broadcaster Verne Lundquist agreed with his longtime CBS colleague on a recent episode of McCord and co-host Peter Kostis’ podcast, “Kostis & McCord: Off Their Rockers,” a GOLF Production.

But that doesn’t mean the three broadcasting icons can’t reminisce about some of their funniest stories together.

Apparently, some of the best of them include Tiger Woods, David Feherty and Woods’ ex-Steve Williams, whom McCord described as “great flatulence.”

Yes, you read that right.

“You remember when Tiger used to stop his swing, right?” McCord asked his colleagues. “You stop. Everybody says, ‘Oh, man. That’s good.’ … It was one of these two guys [Feherty and Williams] farting, and they’re going to have a contest to see if they can stop Tiger on his golf swing.”

Who will replace Verne Lundquist at the Masters? You have a suggestion

The mere thought of trying to get Woods to stop in the middle of a golf course by passing gas must have paralyzed the men below. And here are the two: Woods’ best man in his marriage, one of golf’s greatest personalities, has a match to make.

Prime Woods (even today’s Woods) would probably star in the soul of any random viewer. But at the Memorial tournament one year, as McCord explained, he found it funny.

“I heard it on that tee, I was down there with him – It was the loudest voice I’ve ever heard in my life,” McCord said. “People are speechless. I don’t know how many there were – a few thousand sitting there? And I don’t know if it was Stevie or if it was Feherty, but it was biblical.

“And Tiger just stopped and looked at him and started laughing.”

Apparently, this was not an unusual occurrence either. Feherty and Williams go at it every time Feherty goes with Woods’ team. Somehow, Williams made it through all those injury-free years until his relationship with Woods ended in 2011.

Of course, there was nothing Woods could do about Feherty, who, as Kostis recounted, once “cut one and the half came out solid” at a former PGA Tour stop at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.

“David cut one and half came out solid. Now at eight o’clock, 10 minutes later he has to negotiate with Tiger,” said Kostis. “The tiger is walking [makes sniffing noise]. And you look at David and you go, ‘What the hell?’

“And David goes, ‘I’m sorry, I’m hurting myself.’

Woods, naturally, left just as CBS threw in Feherty for an interview.
