One of the biggest trades in NHL history went down on this day as two heated rivals swapped legendary players. Also, Nov. 7 saw some of the best players who will skate in Detroit have big moments, and many defensemen have big nights on the score sheet. Esposito Opens on Broadway
The Boston Bruins and New York Rangers completed the largest trade in NHL history on November 7, 1975. The Bruins sent center Phil Esposito and defenseman Carol Vadnais for center Jean Ratelle, defenseman Brad Park, and defenseman minor leaguer Joe Zanussi.
Esposito was not happy about being traded to one of his most hated rivals. In fact, back in 2013, he showed that he needed to move on.
I didn’t choose to go to Boston. I signed a contract in Boston for less money than I would have gotten going to the WHA. I could make millions doing that. And you know how they got me back? Three weeks later, they traded me (to the New York Rangers).

He didn’t let his emotions get in the way of his performance, as Esposito wore a Rangers uniform later that night. He scored two goals and added an assist in the Rangers’ 7-5 victory over the Oakland Seals.
Good Beneficiaries Always Come to Inheritance
Hall of Fame goaltenders Jacques Plante and Glenn Hall are linked during their long careers. They spent years as rivals before finally spending two seasons as teammates with St. Louis Blues. Both vendors have many memories of this day.
On the 7th of Nov. 1957, Plante recorded his 27th shutout for the Montreal Canadiens in a 6-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Maurice Richard and Claude Provost each scored a goal and added two assists to lead the charge.
Two years later, on November 7, 1959, Plante started a Canadiens game wearing a face mask for the first time in his NHL career, six days after wearing it for the first time, in a 2-2 tie with Hall and Chicago. The Blackhawks.
Hall scored 38th his career close on November 7, 1961, as Bill Hay tallied four assists in the Blackhawks’ 6-0 victory over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs.

One year later, on November 7, 1962, Hall made his 502n.d started the streak with a 3-3 tie with the Bruins. He had played all 501 minutes of the previous game, but that ended when a back injury forced him out of the game, and Denis DeJordy came in to replace him.
On the 6th of Nov. 1965, Hall recorded another shutout in a 9-0 shutout of Toronto. Bobby Hull was the star of the night by hitting his 15thth career hat trick and added three assists. He went on to score a league record 54 goals in the 1965–66 season.
Finally, on Nov. 7, 1968, Plante recorded his 65th career shutout in the Blues’ 8-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The center of St. Louis Red Berenson scored six goals and added an assist to become the first player to have a six-goal game in the NHL since the Red Wings’ Sid Howe back in 1944.
Red Wing Legends Shining
Rookie Alex Delvecchio scored the first two goals of his NHL career on November 7, 1951, and added an assist in the Red Wings’ 4-4 tie against the Rangers. Twenty-two years later, on November 7, 1973, the Red Wings fired head coach Ted Garvin and named Delvecchio in his place. However, he was not yet retired, so Garvin coached his last game that night. Delvecchio officially retired two days later and began coaching.
On Nov. 7, 1954, Ted Lindsay became the first player in franchise history and the fifth player in the NHL to score 250 goals. Goalie Terry Sawchuk got his 48th A career-ending 1-0 win over the Rangers.
Gordie Howe received help on November 7, 1968, for 1,600.th the point of his amazing career. The historic assist came on Delvecchio’s first-half goal in a 5-2 win over the Minnesota North Stars.
Great Defense Day
Jon Van Boxmeer had a great night on Nov. 7, 1981, in the Buffalo Sabres’ 6-2 road win over the New York Islanders. He scored a natural hat trick and added two assists to set the franchise single-game record for most points by a defenseman.
Bruce Driver became the all-time leading scorer among defensemen for the New Jersey Devils on November 7, 1990, in a 6-3 loss to the Islanders. Since then he has been passed by two Hall of Famers, Scott Niedermayer, and Scott Stevens.
Defenseman Doug Crossman scored his first career hat trick on November 7, 1992, including the game-winning goal in overtime. He also picked up three assists to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 6-5 victory over the Islanders, to give Terry Crisp his 150th NHL victory.
Brian Leetch scored a goal in overtime on November 7, 2002, leading the Rangers past the Calgary Flames 1-0. With tlly, he became the first defenseman to score seven regular-season overtime goals in league history.
Odds & Ends
Darryl Sittler had an assist on November 7, 1979, to become only the third player ever to score 700 points with the Maple Leafs. Defenseman Borje Salming added four assists as Toronto won 7-4 at St.
The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 on November 7, 1980. It was his only 92nd game.n.d career game, Wayne Gretzky took 100th help for his first job.
The Washington Capitals retired their first No. 1 in franchise history on Nov. 7, 1981, as it sends Yvon Labre’s number 7 over the top. The defenseman had 12 goals, 96 points, and 756 penalty minutes in 334 games.
On November 7, 1982, Gilbert Perreault became the first player in Sabers history to score 400 goals as a member of the team. The milestone came in Buffalo’s 3-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks.
Bernie Nicholls became the fifth player to score 200 goals in a Kings uniform on November 7, 1987, when they won 5-4 against Rangers. In the same game, former Kings player Marcel Dionne became only the third player in NHL history to record 1,000 assists while scoring two goals and adding an assist in the losing effort. He joined Howe and Gretzky in the 1,000 assist club. There are currently 13 players who will hit this plateau.
Bobby Holik hit 5,000th goal in Devils franchise history on Nov. 7, 2001. Had two goals and an assist to lead New Jersey to a 3-2 win against the visiting Atlanta Thrashers.
Mike Modano scored two first-time goals on November 7, 2007, to become the all-time leading scorer in NHL history born in the United States. He reached 1,233 points over Phil Housley in a 3-1 win over the San Jose Sharks.
Jaromir Jagr skated to his 1,925thth game totals, regular season, and playoffs combined on Nov. 7, 2017. Moved past Howe for second place on the league’s all-time hit list. He finished his career with just 51 combined games played behind Mark Messier for the most.
That same night, Roberto Luongo made his 972nd hitn.d appearances to pass Sawchuk for the third most in NHL history. He made 45 saves, but it was not enough as his Florida Panthers lost 3-1 to the Carolina Hurricanes. He retired in 2019 with 1,044 games played, second only to Martin Brodeur.
Multiple game milestones were set on this day in 2021 as Islanders Casey Cizikas and Ryan Pulock played their 600th and 300th NHL games, respectively. David Perron also tied Bobby Plager for the 10th most games played in Blues history with his 616th and Craig Berube coached his 200th game to become the eighth Blues coach to reach that milestone. Finally, to cap off the night, Danny DeKeyser played his 500th game in the NHL – all with the Red Wings.
On November 7, 2022, Connor McDavid played his 500th game in the NHL. In those 500 games, he scored 252 goals and 724 points.
On November 7, 2023, Artemi Panarin scored a goal to increase his 2023-24 total to seven goals and 20 points in 12 games played (GP). He became the eighth player in Ranger history to reach the 20-point mark in a season in 12 or fewer games, joining Pavel Bure (11 GP in 2001-02), Carey Wilson (11 GP in 1988-89), Walt Poddubny (11 GP in -1986-87), Rod Gilbert (11 GP in 1972-73), Jaromir Jagr (12 GP in 2006-07), Frank Boucher (12 GP in 1929-30) and Bill Cook (12 GP in 1929- 30).
That same night, Martin Necas scored 1:30 into overtime for his ninth career overtime goal, second in franchise history behind Sebastian Aho (only 10), who assisted in Necas’ victory. He also became the third player in NHL history to score nine overtime goals before his 300th game. Others: Nels Stewart and Frank Finnigan (both nine).
Noah Dobson scored his 34th career goal on November 7, 2023, passing Tomas Jonsson for the second most by an Islanders defenseman before age 24, behind Denis Potvin.
The Sharks finally won their first game of the 2023-24 season when they defeated the Flyers 2-1 on November 7, 2023. Mackenzie Blackwood made 38 saves in the win – the second most saves by a goaltender in their first career win. with the club (debut or otherwise), behind only Troy Grosenick (45 on Nov. 16, 2014).
