South Africa loose in the chase: Kerr’s football masterclass
Chasing 159, South Africa faced an uphill task to record the highest run scorer in the Women’s T20 World Cup final. Openers Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits provided a strong start, building a promising partnership of 51 runs in just under seven overs. Wolvaardt looked in fine form, hitting 33 off 27 balls, but the tide changed in the 10th over when Kerr struck twice in quick succession. Kerr first removed the South African captain, followed by the dismissal of Anneke Boschwho contributed to South Africa’s victory in the semi-finals Australia. Kerr’s double hit left the Proteas reeling, and they couldn’t recover.
With South Africa in the middle, the main players like it Marizanne Kapp and Tryon falling at a low rate, New Zealand tightened their grip on the game. Kerr’s good spell of 4-0-24-3, combined Rosemary Mairtaking three wickets, dismantled the Proteas batting line-up. Eden Carson and Halliday also contributed with key wickets, as South Africa were bowled out for 126 for nine. Despite the early promise, the Proteas lost by 32 runs, leaving New Zealand to celebrate their first victory in the Women’s T20 World Cup.
