The USA’s first test since Gregg Berhalter was against Canada, who finished fourth in their first Copa America game.
The US Men’s National Team is coming off a tumultuous summer. The country that will host the Copa America 2024 exited the competition in the group stage after failing to collect points against Panama and Uruguay. Poor performance saw US Soccer fire Gregg Berhalter, leaving the Stars and Stripes without a coach for months until Mauricio Pochettino was hired recently.
Canada, on the other hand, finally got its first win (and a goal) under Jesse Marsch, and made a deep run at Copa America 2024, achieving the highest finish of a CONCACAF team in the entire tournament. The Reds will hope to continue their streak with the Stars and Stripes in their international friendly against the team that eliminated them from the CONCACAF Gold Cup last year.

The USMNT will not be at full strength this international break. Sergio Dest is still recovering from tearing his ACL, leaving the door open for Joe Scally to get another nod at right back. Tyler Adams, had back surgery in mid-July and has not recovered.
Tim Weah will miss the match again after picking up a hamstring injury on August 19. The defender will have to wait a little longer for his red card against Panama in the Copa America 2024.
Other notable absentees include Weston McKennie and Antonee Robinson.

The biggest name missing from Canada’s squad ahead of their match against the USA is Ismael Kone. The player injured his ankle in training in mid-August. The new Marseille signing will focus on his recovery during the international break before making his Ligue 1 debut.
Marsch’s squad includes Niko Sigur and Stephen Afrifa, two new faces who could feature for the Reds. Sigur is dealing with a minor muscle injury, but the 20-year-old continues to make the team.

The USMNT’s injury problems combined with Canada’s defensive structure do not bode well for a high-scoring story. After all, Marsch’s squad made it to the third-place Copa America in large part due to their low blocking and success on the counter attack. The Stars and Stripes may be desperate for a win after a disappointing summer, but they will be well-matched against the Reds.
