USWNT and NWSL star Alex Morgan has announced his retirement from soccer

USWNT and NWSL legend Alex Morgan has confirmed he will retire from soccer at the end of the 2024 season.

The 35-year-old striker shared an emotional video on social media announcing the news, looking back on his playing career.

“I grew up in this club, it was more than soccer,” he said. “It was camaraderie and unwavering respect and support for each other, the relentless pressure of global investment in women’s sport, and key moments of success both on and off the field.

“I’m very happy to have loaned the crest for more than 15 years. I learned a lot about myself during that time and a lot of that is a credit to our teammates and fans.

“I feel very proud of where this team is headed, and I will always be a fan of the USWNT. My desire to succeed may have been driving me, but what I got was more than I could have asked for and hoped for. .”

Morgan will finish his career having played 224 games for the US national team, scoring 123 goals. He currently captains NWSL San Diego Wave FC, after returning in 2022.

He has played for Orlando Pride and Portland Thorns over the years, and had brief spells at Lyon and WSL side Tottenham Hotspur. The striker, however, just missed out on representing her country at the Paris 2024 Olympics, after being left out by Emma Hayes.

Off the field, Morgan fought tirelessly for the women’s game, becoming an inspiration to many young girls around the world.
