Video: “It wasn’t meant to be” – Xabi Alonso reacts to Europa League final defeat

Bayer Leverkusen lost for the first time this season, losing 3-0 to Atalanta in the Europa League final, ending their 51-match unbeaten run.

Leverkusen entered the final knowing they were just two games away from completing the unbeaten treble.

However, it was no good for Alonso’s side in Dublin on Wednesday night as they lost to their Italian team-mates, Ademola Lookman scoring a superb hat-trick.

It’s been an incredible season for Leverkusen, who won their first Bundesliga title without being beaten all season.

The game looked to be the longest game for Alonso’s side and the Spaniard admitted afterwards that it was not meant to be and that his side were second best on the night.

The newly-crowned German champions have the chance to end their season on a high and complete the home double when they face Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final on Saturday.
