For decades, PGA Tour rules and regulations have made it difficult for professionals to wear fashionable clothing that reflects their personality on the course.
Professional golfers of recent years have all sported the same attire in tournaments: tight pants and close-fitting, collared shirts.
In urban cultures around the world, streetwear is becoming a major channel of self-expression, with people choosing to make their own statement through fashion.
After ending his longtime partnership with Nike, 2015 PGA Championship winner Jason Day has made the bold move to become the first Tour Pro to play in the Malbon outfit.
Founded in 2017 by Steve Malbon, it is a lifestyle brand that combines golf with streetwear from other cultures, such as skateboarding, surfing, winter sports and hip-hop.
With a mission to make golf ‘cool’ again, the former Australian No.1 has been sporting some more edgy and lifestyle-influenced outfits than usual – the idea being to appeal to a younger audience.
Malbon’s collaborations include golf brands such as FootJoy, TaylorMade and Nike.
However, the reaction to Day’s brand promotion has not been all positive, with critics saying he was playing ‘too much fabric’ and that it was ‘disrespectful’ to golf etiquette.
The brand also hired English golfer Charley Hull as the face of the women’s range.
Hull has earned a reputation for his outgoing personality and willingness to promote his image on the world stage.
When he signed his contract with the brand, he explained that he is “proud to represent this kind of stylish and creative lifestyle”.
The Los Angeles-based brand is booming on social media and playing its part in empowering the youth in sports.
