Golfers can look for a tournament with four days of solid golf.

They could win again with a brilliant final round.

They can even win by catching fire on the back nine on Sunday.

Or maybe make a bird at the end.

Not many are doing what Jonathan Byrd did in the 2010 edition of this week’s PGA Tour event, the Shriners Children’s Open.

Late in the final day American Byrd, Scotland’s Martin Laird and Aussie Cameron Percy were locked in a tie after playing in regulation and wondered if there was time to play an extra fourth hole in the play-off as dusk fell.

But they chose to play the par-3 17th hole and, happily in hindsight, made a gentleman’s agreement to stop if any of them had trouble reading the green.

Turns out no one needed a putter.

Byrd got the first play, pulled a 6-iron 204 yards to the pin and hit.

Later he said he did not see what happened next.

The ball landed 10 feet from the flag, progressed quietly to the pin and disappeared.

“Did it come in?” he asked his caddy and when he finally found out he had, he politely tried to calm his nerves because Laird and Percy needed to match him to extend the playoffs!

As it turns out, they both found a hole of sorts. Unfortunately it was a wet one (it was a lake) and Byrd was the champion.

“It’s hard to process, I’m still in shock,” Byrd said afterward.

It was Byrd’s fourth PGA Tour title and he took advantage of his luck.

The victory earned him a spot in the Tournament of Champions the following year – and he won it.

He also got to hang out with Justin Timberlake who sponsored the tournament.
