WATCH: Parthiv Patel openly criticizes his former IPL franchise RCB

Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel recently shared his views on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team during his tenure, highlighting the team’s focus on individual players rather than a cohesive unit. Patel commented on the “Cyrus Says” podcast, where he discussed the band’s dynamic and the reasons why Indian Premier League (IPL) the topic is drought.

Individualism at RCB

During his time with RCB, Patel noted that the team’s focus was more on the performance of individual players rather than the team as a whole. He noted that the group “always talked about people” and that the famous trio of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, again Chris Gayle commanded the group’s attention. This individualistic approach, according to Patel, has contributed greatly to the team’s struggle to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) title.
“I played for RCB, I have been there for four years. The group always talks about individuals and not about the group. And then everyone will come out of that group and say that,” the 39-year-old said on the Cyrus Says podcast.

Impact on group dynamics

Patel’s comments suggest that the team’s emphasis on individual players created a culture where collective effort was often overlooked. He believes this has hindered the team’s ability to work as a cohesive unit, leading to a lack of collaboration and, ultimately, poor performance. The team’s reliance on a few star players meant that the rest of the squad often felt neglected, which had a negative impact on their motivation.
“Because everything is about Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle when I was in the team. So they were given a kind of special favor all the time so the culture of the team was not there and you could see it when they played, and that’s why they didn’t win trophies. That is the truth,” Patel added.

The title of the IPL drought

The RCB team has struggled to win the IPL title despite having the best players in the world. Patel says this is due to the group’s inability to come together as a unit. He believes the team’s focus on individual play instead of teaming up has been a major factor in their IPL title drought. The veteran’s views highlight the importance of team flexibility and the need for a balanced approach to ensure success in team sports.

Criticism of RCB culture

Patel’s comments also criticized the culture of the team during his time with RCB. He believes that the team’s focus on individual players is jeopardizing the team’s status. Patel’s criticism is not limited to the good performance of the team but also extends to the culture within the team which he believes was not leading to success.
