In the third ODI match between England and Australia at the Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street, cricket fans witnessed an on-field display that left even one of the best and most experienced players in the game, Steve Smithin disbelief. Brydon Carse took a stunning boundary to dismiss Smith, changing the course of the game and giving England a crucial win.

Time came in the 34th over, with Jofra Archer hitting a well-placed Smith, who had 60 off 82 balls and looked set for a century. In the third ball of the over, Archer bowled a short ball, and Smith, known for his fine technique and precise timing, delivered a powerful shot. The ball seemed destined to run to the boundary, but Brydon Carse had other plans. Standing at backward square leg, Carse had to run to his left to reach the ball, which was moving at a high pace. With incredible enthusiasm, Carse slid to his knees and held on to the grip with both hands, making it look easy.

Smith stood on the platform, stunned, unable to believe that his timely shot had landed in Carse’s hands. Archer, wearing a rueful smile, acknowledged the brilliance of the catch, while Carse was mobbed by his teammates in celebration. Smith, who was looking for a big score, had to return to the pavilion after scoring 60 runs, including five boundaries.

This wicket was a turning point in Australia’s innings. Smith had been the anchor of the Australian team, and his dismissal derailed their momentum at a crucial stage of the game. However, a spirited 77 not out from Alex Carey and key contributions from Hardie (44) and Green (42) took Australia’s total to 304/7.

England keep the ODI series alive

England, in reply, put in a clinical performance, led by a blistering ton from Harry Brook and a half-century by Will Jacks. Although Australia’s bowlers, including Cameron Green (2-45) and Mitchell Starc (2-63), came in, it was not enough to prevent England from winning under the DLS method. England reached 254/4 in 37.4 overs, winning the match by 46 runs.

The result gave England their first win in the five-match series, and kept the tournament alive after Australia had won the first two ODIs. However, it was Brydon Carse’s incredible catch that is always the highlight of the match, a moment that showed the unpredictable and exciting nature of cricket.
