Great golfers have always understood that every club can do more than one job.
The great Severiano Ballesteros would undoubtedly have liked everyone to play with only a handful, so he had a knack for the lie, angle and height of his clubs.
The equally great Tiger Woods is another fan of versatility with his clubs and in this video made by TaylorMade he reveals that he has a 5 wood for about 100 yards.
Not only that, you use the club for two completely different purposes.
And while Woods’ average yards are more than the average golfer, that doesn’t mean we can’t learn lessons from the 15-time major champion.
Plus, in the video, Woods actually teaches world number one Scottie Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood a thing or two.

“I like the 5-wood with options because I use them a lot,” Woods tells the other two.
“I don’t use a 2-iron very often anymore because it has changed,” he said. “I took it.”
Fleetwood nods in agreement.
“But I like the 5-wood without the foul and cut it,” Woods said.
“Say we’re playing big tournaments with a lot of difficulty, 170 yards, I might open a 5-wood and one chip.”
Fleetwood smiles in recognition – or perhaps realization.
“I like to have that approach,” Woods said.
“My 5-wood will carry about 255 but I can hit it either way. I set it up so I can hit it either way.”
But while that’s his way to the middle of the fairway, the club can help him at other times, too.
“I really like to hit small chip shots especially.”
Fleetwood smiles and says: “I want to hit chip shots now.”
He and Scheffler lined the rough terrain, with a tree slightly blocking their path to the target. They play a simple 5-wood chip with a finished shape.
And both fly out in a lovely way from left to right.
“Do you see how easy that is?” Woods said. “Well done.”
