As the final squads for Copa America 2024 are released, Venezuela has confirmed that the youngest player in the tournament will represent their country.
Just a month after the world watched Real Madrid win the Champions League, the Euros and the Copa America are set to take place this summer. The world’s best players have received call-ups to their national teams to compete for their countries in two of the biggest tournaments in international football.
While European players such as Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne and England’s Bukayo Saka will showcase in Germany, South American stars, including Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Vinicius Jr. from Brazil, headed for the United States.
These tournaments also give unknown players a chance to shine in front of a global audience, highlighting the unique qualities they bring to the pitch, no matter how small.
The shortest player competing in Copa America 2024 is Yeferson Soteldo of Venezeula. The midfielder is 5 feet 3 inches tall, and represented his country in the Copa America 2020.
Soteldo, currently on loan at Gremio, has three goals in 17 appearances for the club since arriving in January. Although the Venezuelan player’s position naturally sees him dominate the midfield, he started on the left side.
The 26-year-old has not let his height stop him from pursuing a successful international career. He has made 39 appearances for Venezuela since his first call-up in 2015, and has registered four goals, including the winner against Chile in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Fernando Batista still has a few days to decide his initial 30-man squad for his final squad, and if Soteldo doesn’t make the final selection, then Mexico’s Fernando Beltrán, who stands at 5 foot 5 inches tall, will be the shortest player in the Copa. America 2024.
