Why DeMar DeRozan Chose Sacramento Over LA, Miami, Philly
DeMar DeRozan had several offers from NBA teams during free agency this summer, but he ultimately decided to head to Sacramento.
“Philly was an option,” DeRozan told Paul George Podcast P With Paul George. “Lakers were always an option. The Clippers were an option. And Heat was an option as well. Those groups, of course, were the real personal, legitimate choices I was considering. “
DeRozan has been with the Bulls for the past three seasons, where he has averaged 25.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists over 229 games – missing just three games in that span. Good for a 35 year old.
DeMar says it took a while for him to finally sign with the Kings because he wanted to make sure it was the right decision.
One of the main reasons why he shook the culture in which it was built.
“I was just looking for an opportunity to win at a high level wherever that would be,” explained DeRozan. “[Sacramento] they showed up, and they showed interest, like real interest. When I sat down and watched it, I analyzed it with the team. Great players. A great coach. I always remember the last few years and always seeing them light up this sweet bell and win and all that.
“I definitely got a move. That’s one thing you always want to be a part of is the contagious culture of an organization that wants to win. When I looked at all that, I just felt worthy.”
The forward will be playing alongside talent like De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis and hopes to contribute to the team’s offense.
DeMar says he can bring leadership and his skills will hopefully help push the team “over the edge”.
