Why Real Madrid are hiring Stockport County’s assistant manager
Real Madrid are said to be adding Stockport County assistant manager Andy Mangan to their coaching staff on the advice of Carlo Ancelotti’s son, Davide.
Ancelotti is in the fourth season of his second season in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu and his job security is not in question.
However, Athletic reports that the Italian is looking to refresh his coaching staff by adding Mangan, who works in the third tier of English football with Stockport.
Mangan met Davide Ancelotti, who works for Carlo as an assistant manager, at a training session in the past. Ancelotti are looking to diversify their coaching set-up with a little blood and fresh ideas, leading to their pursuit of Mangan.
Stockport initially appointed Mangan as an attacking assistant coach back in March, a position he made permanent in the summer. It is this specialty that has attracted Ancelotti.
Mangan will change Edgeley Park to the Bernabeu once the operating permit is approved. The move will go down as one of the most surprising and impressive in modern EFL history.
Stockport have made a strong start to the 2024/25 season and sit top of League One after four rounds of matches, taking 10 points so far.
The 38-year-old striker retired from playing back in 2018. He played 425 games during his career, scoring 118 goals and representing 10 different teams. Mangan’s highest level was third, his best season in League One coming in 2015/16 with Shrewsbury Town – he scored five goals in 19 games.
Madrid, meanwhile, return to La Liga action on September 14 with a visit to Real Sociedad.
