Willy Hutchinson outs Craig Richards, Queensberry leads 5-vs-5

Willy Hutchinson pumps his dog en route to a 12 round, unanimous decision win over Craig Richards on June 1 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Willie Hutchinson went all in to put his team on the board early.

Queensberry came out on top 1-0 against Matchroom on the strength of its light heavyweight unanimous decision victory over Craig ‘Spider’ Richards. The scores were 119-109, 117-111 and 116-112 for Hutchinson in the first game of the 5-vs-5 tournament on Saturday at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The bout marked the first scheduled of 12 rounds for Hutchinson (18-1, 13 knockouts). The 25-year-old Scot had never been stretched beyond seven before Saturday. He put in plenty of rounds in the first half as Matchroom-promoted Richards lived up to his reputation as a slow starter.

Richards found some breakthroughs during the war but was unable to enjoy sustained success. Hutchinson is less connected with his jab as he constantly switches between southpaw and orthodox stances.

The tempo of the fight changed in the ninth round, as Richards (18-4-1, 11 KOs) landed a right hand. The 34-year-old Londoner continued his momentum in an impressive tenth round. Richards fought like a man who desperately needed to be beaten but it almost cost him. Hutchinson was rocked by left hooks and right hands throughout the frame but came back late.

Hutchinson stood and played to a small crowd in the final two rounds to preserve his most important victory to date.

The distance victory was worth one point for Queensberry. Each team gets one point for each decision win and two points for elimination. Team captains get double points if they win.
