Wilson Contreras Broke Arm, To Have Surgery

Cardinals catcher Wilson Contreras he was diagnosed with a broken left arm, the team said. The team didn’t give a timeline for an immediate recovery, but it’s clear he’ll be out for a long time.

Contreras is injured in tonight’s game against the Mets. He took a direct hit on a JD Martinez swing while going to receive a Miles Mikolas donation (video provided in X by John Denton of MLB.com). Contreras was in obvious pain immediately and an examination quickly revealed a broken bone. Contreras told reporters after the game that he will have surgery and expects to miss six to eight weeks (X link by Denton). Contreras snaps a comeback at the All-Star Break.

In a system where almost everyone else has underperformed, Contreras has been a bright spot for the Cardinals. He is hitting .280/.398/.551 in 128 plate appearances. Among catchers with 100+ plate appearances, only Ryan Jeffers slightly better with a wRC+ rating. Contreras has also been the best player on the St. Louis roster. Louis, leading the team in slugging percentage, slugging and home runs.

Small backstop Ivan Herrera you will enter the first job of catching. The former top prospect is hitting .215/.264/.369 over 72 trips to the plate. Pedro Pages he is the only other participant on the 40-man roster. Derrick Goold of St. Louis Post-Dispatch tweets that Pages was pulled during his game in Triple-A, suggesting he will be called up tomorrow.

Contreras is in the second season of a five-year free agent contract. He is .266/.366/.481 in just over 600 plate appearances as a Cardinal.
